What is the ordinary maintenance of the elevators?

According to the reference standard 15 of the Presidential Decree 162/99, the owner of a lift is obliged to have his lift serviced by a specialized person, under penalty of keeping it in operation. Furthermore, as far as elevators maintenance is concerned, the maintenance technician can perform two activities on the system: preventive maintenance and verification of the integrity of all components such as ropes, parachutes, alarm systems, etc. For the latter type of activity, maintenance must be performed once every six months and this is why it is defined as a six-month report. Furthermore, the frequency of preventive maintenance varies according to the needs of the plant. Before carrying out any type of maintenance, however, the maintenance technician has the obligation to write each time the number of maintenance visits that must be performed every year in advance.

The importance of lighting in elevator maintenance

One of the fundamental aspects of elevator maintenance are above all that of lights for use in the cabin. Good lighting, in fact, has the purpose of guaranteeing greater safety for both passengers and annual maintenance staff. As for the standard lighting level, it must reach an intensity of around 100 lux, on the contrary, the emergency light must guarantee a minimum of 5 lux of one-hour duration.

As regards the compartment in which the maintenance personnel operate, it must ensure the lighting of approximately 50 lux, about one meter above the cabin and the floor of the shaft pit. Finally, it must be remembered that all the lighting elements must be equipped with protection against mechanical damage: in the event of danger, the switch must be reached by personnel without problems, while the lux level must be read by moving the instrument to the measurement towards the main source level.

European regulations concerning lighting values

As we all know, in recent years the minimum lighting values, under which it is forbidden to go, have been introduced by European regulations. This argument is valid not only for the lights used in the cabin but also for the passenger compartment. In this way, both passenger and personnel maintenance operations will be carried out in a completely safe manner. To conclude, therefore, a good lighting system inside the elevators will make the latter more practical and modern.
